Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge each other. He was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
