Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently wager against each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. He moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
